Short Term Rentals


The Township of Algonquin Highlands' Short-Term Rental By-Law officially came into effect on Oct. 1, 2024, and the registration and licensing system for residents who operate short term rentals of their properties can be accessed below. 

Required Documentation


Applicants should review and complete the following documentation, which is required to proceed with the licensing process.

Submitting Your Application


1. Proof of Ownership: Provide a copy of the Title/Deed, Transfer Document or Title Abstract from onland.ca

2. General Liability Insurance: Please provide a copy of your insurance showing $2 million (minimum) general liability 

3. STR Licence Sworn Declaration: Provide a completed copy of the STR Licence Sworn Declaration

4.  Pictures of the front and rear of the Short-Term Rental

5. Zoning Declaration: Applicants are asked to complete and submit the Short-Term Rental Zoning Declaration

6. The licence number of any current or previous Short-Term Rental

7. Proof of Septic System Details: Installation reports for confirmation of the details in the system, pump-out receipts within the last three years for proof of maintenance

8. Fire Safety/Floor Plan: Please follow the example in the Sample Fire Safety/Floor Plan

Must include: 

  • The use of each room

  • The location of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and early warning devices

  • The location of fire extinguishers 

  • The location of records of tests and maintenance of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, early warning devices and fire extinguishers 

  • The location of all gas and electric appliances

  • The location of all entrances/exits to and from the building

9. Exterior Site Plan: See Sample Exterior Site Plan

Must include:

  • The location of all buildings and structures on the property

  • The location of wells and all components of sewage systems

  • The exterior decks and related site amenities, including dimensioned parking spaces

  • Setbacks from property lines 

  • Setbacks from high-water mark

 

Filing a Complaint


If there is a Short-Term Rental property near you and you believe there are some infractions, you can submit a complaint. 

You can do so in one of two ways:
