The Official Plan is a land use planning document that provides guidance for the long-term growth and development of the municipality.

The Official Plan, or OP, sets out the Township’s goals, objectives and policies for future land use, while having regard for relevant social, economic and environmental matters. The current Official Plan for the Township of Algonquin Highlands was adopted in 2005 and updated in 2011.

In accordance with Section 26 of the Planning Act, the Official Plan is periodically reviewed to ensure that it continues to meet the changing economic, social and environmental needs of the municipality. Such a review was conducted in the fall of 2010. The results have been consolidated into the Official Plan policy and address a number of areas, including:

  • Environmental Management (wetlands, lake capacity, site evaluation reports and landscape conservation)
  • Development within Settlement Areas
  • Development within the Waterfront designation (setback from shoreline, shoreline activity areas, lake plans, etc.)
  • Aggregate Operations (quarries and pits)
  • Heritage Resources
  • Dark Sky Friendly Lighting
  • Active Transportation
  • Parkland and Public Water Access Points
  • Transportation
  • Non-complying Buildings and Structures, and
  • Complete Applications.
