COVID-19 Impacts on Parks, Recreation and Trails servicesUpdated January 5, 2022 3:30 pm

During the COVID-19 pandemic and particularly with regard to the Province’s Emergency Declaration the following measures have been put in place for the Parks, Recreation and Trails Department:

  • Stanhope, Dorset and Oxtongue Recreation Centres are closed until further notice, phone and email inquiries available at 705-766-9968, recreation@algonquinhighlands.ca,

Playgrounds and play structures  OPEN   Playgrounds are open, Provincial COVID-19 guidelines must be followed including physical distancing and group sizing.
Outdoor Rinks OPEN  

The outdoor rinks are dependent on the weather for updated conditions visit Notices & Current Conditions

Visitors must adhere to all provincial COVID-19 restrictions including maximum allowable group sizes and social distancing. Restrictions change frequently and sometimes with short notice, it is your responsibility to ensure that you are aware of the current COVID-19 restrictions prior to heading out. Failure to follow the regulations, and/or receipt of complaints of non-compliance related to these regulations may result in the closure of the rinks.

Recreational Trails - hiking (except Dorset Tower)/Ski and Snowshoe OPEN  

All hiking trails remain open with the exception of the Dorset Tower which remains closed.  For ski and snowshoe trails please visit Ski & Snowshoe Trails for updates on conditions.

Dorset Scenic Lookout Tower and Trail   CLOSED Closed. The Dorset Tower will remain closed until further notice.
Campsites – Haliburton Highlands Water Trails – Frost Centre and Poker Lakes OPEN  

Backcountry campsites associated with the Haliburton Highlands Water Trails are OPEN. Visitors must adhere to all provincial Covid-19 restrictions including maximum allowable group sizes and social distancing. Restrictions change frequently and sometimes with short notice, it is your responsibility to ensure that you are aware of the current COVID-19 restrictions prior to heading out on your trip. Equipment Rentals   CLOSED Equipment rentals are not available at this time.

FACILITIES

     
Algonquin Highlands Trails Office – 20130 Highway 35.   CLOSED

Due to COVID-19 the Algonquin Highlands Trails Office is currently closed for in-person service until further notice. We continue to be available by phone and email 8:30am-5:00pm seven days a week. All campsites, hiking/snowshoe and ski trails remain available. A number of our services are available online, including campsite reservations and ski trail passes at ahtrails.ca

Dorset Recreation Centre – 1051 Main Street Dorset   CLOSED

Pass holders will be pro-rated upon re-opening. Haliburton County Public Library book depot services are currently not available.  Public access computers at the Dorset Recreation Centre are currently not available.  All other recreation amendities remain closed at this time.

Stanhope Firefighters’ Community Hall – 1095 North Shore Road   CLOSED Facility remains closed and we are not accepting reservations at this time.
Oxtongue Lake Community Centre, picnic grounds and pavilion. – 3979 Hwy 60   CLOSED Facility remains closed and we are not accepting reservations at this time.

(Please note:  As these are public facilities, extraordinary hygiene practices are required)

Public Washrooms (not including Township office or Dorset Recreation Centre) OPEN

  • Elvin Johnson Park
  • Stanhope Courts and Playing Field
  • Oxtongue Lake Community Centre Park
  • Water Trail access points. 

These facilities are not regularly checked and cleaned, users are asked to undertake appropriate hygiene protocols.
