Short Term Rentals


The Township of Algonquin Highlands' Short-Term Rental By-Law officially came into effect on Oct. 1, 2024, and the registration and licensing system for residents who operate short term rentals of their properties can be accessed below.

Residents may wish to review the following associated documentation. Completed and submitted versions of these forms are a requirement to proceed with the licensing process under the new by-law: 

The County of Haliburton conducted a thorough review of options in the creation of short-term rental by-laws, a process entailing an extensive examination of municipal best practices as well as stakeholder engagement, including public surveys. 

Residents can view the Township's Municipal Accommodation Tax By-Law, also known as the MAT Tax By-Law, here. 

Submitting Your Application


A complete application includes the following documents: 

Proof of Ownership: Provide a copy of the Title/Deed or Title Abstract from onland.ca 

Zoning: Applicants are asked to complete and submit the Short-Term Rental Zoning Declaration.

Septic System: Installation reports for confirmation of the details on the system, pump-out receipts within the last three years for proof of maintenance. 

Site Plan and Floor Plan: Please include:

  • Location of all buildings and structures

  • Location of well and components of sewage systems, use of each room

  • Location of smoke/carbon monoxide alarms and early warning devices

  • Location of fire extinguishers 

  • Location of records of tests and maintenance of smoke/carbon monoxide alarms, early warning devices and fire extinguishers 

  • Location of all gas and electric appliances

  • Location of all entrances/exits to and from the buildings

  • Exterior decks and related site amenities, including dimensioned parking spaces

Filing a Complaint


If there is a Short-Term Rental property near you and you believe there are some infractions, you can submit a complaint. 

You can do so in one of two ways:
