Dorset Recreation Centre reopens to public

The Dorset Recreation Centre is again open to the public following a grand re-opening celebration on July 27.

The event marked the completion of a large-scale renovation project at the centre that has included the reconstruction of interior walls; waterproofing of the building's foundation; the installation of a new HVAC system; LED lighting; new electrical and plumbing components; a reconfigured fitness room; a new reception area; and accessible entryway and washrooms. A new space for the Haliburton County Public Library is also located on the building's lower level.

During Saturday's celebration, Mayor Liz Danielsen thanked the community, as well as Township staff for their work on the project. The Gonneau Building Group completed the renovation work. The Township of Algonquin Highlands received $100,000 from the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program for the HVAC system upgrade, with 80 per cent of that funding coming from the Federal government and 20 per cent from the Province. Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock MP Jamie Schmale brought greetings on behalf of himself and MPP Laurie Scott, calling the project a prime example of different levels of government working together to achieve success.

The event also included the official dedication of Tapscott Lopes Park, previously known as the Dorset Pavilion and Community Park, which has been gifted to the Township of Algonquin Highlands by Don Tapscott and Ana Lopes. Mayor Danielsen thanked Mr. Tapscott and Ms. Lopes for their generous donation, calling it one of the largest in the Township's history.

The Dorset Recreation Centre is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. You can find more information about the DRC and recreational programming here.
