Extension of Declaration of Significant Weather Event - April 1

With more freezing rain in the forecast, please note the Township of Algonquin Highlands is extending the Declaration of a Significant Weather Event initially made on Friday, March 28 until this upcoming Friday, April 4. This declaration is made pursuant to Ontario Regulation 239/02, Minimum Maintenance Standards for Municipal Highways. 

This significant weather event is expected to continue to impact Township operations over the next few days. Until conditions improve and the significant weather event ends, please continue to check for updates and service impacts before attending Township of Algonquin Highlands facilities. 

As of Tuesday, April 1, the Administrative Office on North Shore Road is open to the public during its regular operating hours, with continued disruption to telephone and internet services. The Dorset Recreation Centre is also open during its regular hours, and also continues to experience a disruption to telephone service. The Frost Centre Ski Trails remain closed. 

The Township is attempting to re-open waste disposal sites as it is safe to do so. Please check the website for the most current information before attending any AH waste disposal site. 

Municipal workforces will continue to provide maintenance operations, but for safety considerations, operations may need to be temporarily suspended. 

A NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) has been issued for the Stanhope Municipal Airport for no winter maintenance being performed. Fueling for emergency services will continue. Please visit the Township website for contact information. 

Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement for freezing rain, followed by significant rainfall midweek for our region. 

What:

  • Freezing rain with ice accretion of 2 to 5 mm on some surfaces
  • Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy, slippery and hazardous
  • Ice build-up may cause tree branches to break
  • Rain, at times heavy. Total rainfall amounts of 20 to 40 mm. Locally higher amounts are possible in thunderstorms. 

When: Wednesday (April 3) through Thursday (April 4) morning

Additional Information: This freezing rain event will not be nearly as significant as the ice storm from this past weekend.
